SHOP Vintage double bit swamping axe

Vintage double bit swamping axe

€247.00

This example is a vintage American 4 lb swamping style with a flat profile straight Tennessee hickory 31 inch / 79 cm handle, charred and soaked in boiled linseed oil, with an Irish oak wedge and two round steel step wedges. This axe has marks and scars from its long life, probably being over a 100 years old. In my opinion this is a Sager chemical double bit swamping pattern but I can’t be sure.

Double bit axes are great, though few modern companies still make them, they can be seen as a duel purpose tool, one side sharp for felling, and one side a little bit less so for knots, splitting etc. Another advantage of double bits is the amazing balance in the hand, nothing quite feels like it to use.

Swamping style double bits are a particular shape that's quite unusual, this one has a wicked sharp grind that takes a huge bite in softwoods. But as it is vintage I can’t recommend using it too much as you could affect the value.

In order for you to purchase this item you need to be at least 18 years old, and as a result you can arrange to collect this item only, unless you use the contact details to email or call me.
